Payment of Rs 15 thousand for refusing to return 50 paise to the post office

Chennaiचेन्नई: A Chennai resident won a case against the local post office after it refused to return 50 paise in exchange during a transaction. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered the post office to pay compensation of Rs 15,000 to resident Mansha for overcharging. The incident took place on December 3 last year, when Manasha had gone to Polichallur post office to send a registered letter. The postage fee was Rs 29.50. When Mansha paid Rs 30, the post office refused to give her back the 50 paise and said that their system automatically rounds the amount up to Rs 30.

Subsequently, Mansha filed a complaint and argued that this could lead to potential embezzlement and loss of GST revenue to the government. In response, the Post Office explained that amounts less than 50 paise are usually ignored. He also said the software was set to round off transactions to the nearest rupee. On UPI payments, he said that the option was glitched and hence it was discontinued in May 2024. After hearing both the sides, the commission ruled that the post office had admitted to overcharging due to a software error. It called it unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and ordered compensation.
