PCB set to impose heavy financial penalties on Pakistan players after T20 World Cup debacle

NEW DELHI: Angered by Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board is considering financial penalties for the players over their underwhelming campaign, with some sources indicating the fine could be as high as PKR 5 million (approximately USD 18,000) per player.

The move comes after a series of disappointing performances in major global tournaments.

A reliable source said that suitable action is being weighed by the PCB following the team’s elimination from the Super Eight stage of the tournament co hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

“No final decision has been taken on this as yet. But yes it is under consideration to financially penalize the players,” he confirmed to PTI without revealing the details.

He added that there is internal debate over whether imposing financial sanctions would be the appropriate course of action.

PKR 5 million fine under discussion

However, other sources within the PCB claimed that the board is set to fine each player PKR 5 million after they returned home on Sunday night following a disappointing campaign.

Pakistan failed to reach the semifinals, suffering defeats to arch rivals India and England, while their Super Eight clash against New Zealand was washed out.

They registered a win over Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight fixture but it was not enough to secure a semifinal berth.

According to a source, the team’s performance has not only frustrated the PCB but also key figures within the government.

“The feeling is enough is enough and these players despite so much backing let down the nation in big events,” the source added.

Players return home quietly

The Pakistan squad returned in small groups from Sri Lanka, with captain Salman Ali Agha and star batsman Babar Azam among those who landed in Lahore last night.

Players holding central contracts receive monthly retainers along with match fees, win bonuses and a share of the board’s sponsorship revenue.
