‘Peace has never been this close’: Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif claims breakthrough in peace negotiations
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has claimed that a final, agreed-upon text of a peace deal has been reached, stating that Islamabad is now working closely with both sides involved in the negotiations to finalize the next steps.
In a statement posted on X, Sharif said Pakistan has been engaged in intensive mediation efforts and remains committed to advancing the peace process despite what he described as attempts to undermine the negotiations.
Sharif claims breakthrough in talks
The Pakistani Prime Minister said a final draft of the peace agreement had been agreed upon following extensive discussions. “Amid ongoing intense mediation efforts by Pakistan, we are fully aware of the incessant misinformation campaign being waged by those who want to sabotage the peace deal,” Sharif said in his post. He added that despite the alleged misinformation, Pakistan could confirm that a mutually agreed text had been finalized and that discussions were now focused on implementing the next phase of the process.
Misinformation concerns raised
Sharif alleged that certain actors were attempting to derail the negotiations through misinformation and public speculation. Without naming specific individuals or groups, he said Pakistan remained focused on advancing the peace initiative and would not be distracted by efforts aimed at undermining the process. The Prime Minister stressed that diplomatic engagement continued behind the scenes and that Islamabad was coordinating with all relevant stakeholders involved in the negotiations.
Focus shifts to implementation
According to Sharif, attention has now shifted from drafting the agreement to determining the practical steps required for implementation. He stated that Pakistan was working closely with both parties to finalize procedures and arrangements linked to the proposed deal. However, no details regarding the contents of the agreement, implementation timeline or participating parties were disclosed in the statement.
What happens next?
With Pakistan claiming that the text of the agreement has been finalized, attention is expected to focus on the next phase of consultations and formal approvals. Officials have not yet announced when the agreement could be formally adopted or implemented.
For now, Pakistan maintains that negotiations have reached a critical stage, with Sharif asserting that “peace has never been this close” as diplomatic efforts continue toward a potential breakthrough.
