He said, “When youths affected by the paper leak case raised their voice for their future, they were beaten with sticks. Women wrestlers, who are the pride of the country, demanded a fair probe into the allegations against the senior BJP leader, but their protest was crushed. Also, the peaceful protest at India Gate in support of the rape victim was suppressed by the administration as an ‘inconvenience’.” He also raised the issue of arresting Youth Congress workers who opposed the US Trade Deal as ‘anti-national’.

Suppression of the rights of farmers and tribals

Speaking on the issue of environment, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “When common people took to the streets against toxic air, their concerns were dismissed as ‘politics’. When farmers demanded their rights, they were branded as anti-national. Tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and batons are now the medium of communication.” He alleged that the tribal community fighting for the rights of water, forest and land is also being viewed with suspicion.

He said, “A democracy where the prime minister is afraid of questions and crushing dissent becomes the nature of governance is in crisis. Only when the government listens to criticism and remains accountable, democracy is strong.” At the end of his post, he gave a direct warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “Modiji, this is not North Korea, this is India. When power starts to think of itself as ‘nation’ and opposition as ‘enemy’, democracy ends.”
