Penalty pain for East Bengal as FC Goa retain Super Cup

New Delhi: FC Goa became the first team to retain the Super Cup trophy with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over East Bengal in in Margao on Sunday.

At the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium neither of the teams could score in regulation time and then extra 30 minutes.

Borja Herrera missed from the spot for Goa while Mohammed Rashid and PV Vishnu drove their shot over the cross bar in identical fashion.

Sahil Tavora slotted in the winner in sudden death, theย first time the match went that far in the history of Super Cup finals.

In the tie-breaker, East Bengal’s scorers were Kevin Sibille, captain Saul Crespo, Miguel Ferreira, and Anwar Ali.

Goa responded through Javier Siverio, Dejan Drazic, Muhammed Nemil, and David Timor.

Goa’s Udanta Kumam and Tavora converted their penalties in sudden death but EB’s Ahadad and Vishnu couldn’t.

It was Goa’s third Super Cup triumph, the most by any team having first won in 2019, which would make them eligible to compete in play-offs of the Asian Champions League 2, having won at that stage this season to qualify for the group stage.

East Bengal, who had won 2024, remained without a trophy, having lost in the semi-finals in Durand Cup, followed by a shootout loss in IFA Shield final to arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.

The match stretched on till penalties as both teams could find the back of the net even after creating mutiple presentable chances.
