People come here to make death easier, the troubles of the last journey go away by having the darshan of Yamraj…

Gwalior:- Markandeshwar Temple is situated near Phoolbagh of the city. In this temple, the god of death Yamraj is present along with Bholenath. People come from every corner of the region to worship him. It is said that if one wants to reduce the sufferings in the journey towards freedom from death, then Yama should be worshiped here. The more than 350 years old Markandeshwar Temple located in the middle of the city is a center of faith for devotees. People come here especially on the day of Narak Chaudas and Makar Sankranti to have darshan of Yamraj.

Yamraj had lost to Shiva devotee Markandeya.

The family of temple priest Pandit Manoj Bhargava has been serving here for 6 generations. Describing the history of this temple, Pandit Manoj Bhargava says that “Markandeya was a devotee of Rishi Bholenath. When Yamraj came to take Markandeya Rishi and asked him to accompany him, Markandeya Rishi grabbed hold of Shivalinga and started banging his head on it. Pleased with his devotion, Bholentha appeared before him and blessed him with Saptayuga's life.

Because of which Yamraj had to return empty handed from there. After this, the Shivalinga situated there was named after him and people started knowing this Shivalinga by the name of Markandeshwar Mahadev. Let us tell you that when the Scindia dynasty came here, there was a Santaji Rao Temak, he had no children. Someone told them that if they installed the idol of Yamraj near Shivling, they would be blessed with a child.”

When the wish of having a child was fulfilled, a temple was built.

Santaji Rao resolved that when he would have a child, he would build a temple here and establish Yamraj. After some time, when a child was born in their house, Santaji Rao asked for land for the temple from the Scindia dynasty and the Scindia royal family helped in establishing the temple along with the place. After this, Santaji Rao got the statue of Yamraj consecrated here.

The journey from death to Yamalok becomes easier through worship.

Pandit Manoj Bhargava told that “The worship of Yamraj on Makar Sankranti is considered very important in this temple. Because on this day Surya Uttarayan occurs and all auspicious works are started. It is believed that Yamraj is pleased by worshiping on the day of Makar Sankranti. Yamraj is the king of Yamalok, he is worshiped because after death, when the messengers of Yama take the person to Yamalok, he should not face any trouble on the way.

It is said that every person commits sins knowingly or unknowingly, when after death the soul of a person is taken to Yamalok by the messengers of Yama, then the soul has to suffer tortures according to his sins. It takes 11 months to reach Yamalok after death. Yamraj is worshiped so that the tortures we face in this journey are reduced and after reaching there, our mistakes in our accounts are forgiven and we reach heaven.
