Perth Test: Rodrigues’ half-century, Sutherland and Hamilton wrap up India cheaply

Perth, 6 March. Jemimah Rodrigues scored a fighting half-century (52 runs, 84 balls, 133 minutes, seven fours) at the WACA Ground, but the other batsmen could not strongly face the swing of Australian pacers – Annabel Sutherland (4-46) and Lucy Hamilton (3-31) and the Indian team was all out for 198 runs in 62.4 overs on the first day of the day-night only Test. At the end of the first day’s play, the host women had scored 96 runs for three wickets in 27 overs.

In fact, captain Alyssa Healy’s decision to bowl after winning the toss was proved right by her bowlers. Left-arm pacer Hamilton dismissed Smriti Mandhana (four runs) in the sixth over, while Shefali Verma, after scoring 35 runs (48 balls, 66 minutes, six fours), was caught by wicketkeeper Beth Mooney off Sutherland’s ball. Playing the first Test, Pratika Rawal (18), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (19) and Deepti Sharma (7) also could not survive and shortly after lunch (4-99), five wickets of the visiting team fell at 107 runs.

Highest partnership of 43 runs for the sixth wicket between Jemima and Richa

Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh (11) made the highest partnership of 43 runs for the sixth wicket, taking India beyond 150 runs. Hamilton dismissed Rodriguez and Ashley Gardner dismissed Ghosh. Kashvi Gautam (34 not out, 54 balls, 68 balls, three fours) and Sayali Satghare (seven runs) added 38 runs for the ninth wicket to take India near 200.

score card

If we look at the Australian innings that started after tea, Sayali Satghare (2-24) dismissed opener Georgia Voll (two), while Phoebe Litchfield (nine) and captain Alyssa Healy (13) were also out cheaply (3-58). But opener Ellis Perry (43 not out, 62 balls, seven fours) did not allow any further damage to the team with an unbroken 38-run partnership with Sutherland (20 not out, 29 balls, three fours). The host team is still 102 runs behind India.
