Why are fuel prices increasing? (Under Recovery & Global Market)

Global conditions and financial losses of oil companies are the main reasons behind the recent increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. 15 May 2026 There was a huge increase in the prices of petrol and diesel by ₹ 3 each per litre, after which the prices are continuously fluctuating.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, while clarifying the reasons behind this increase, had said that due to the sharp rise in the prices of crude oil in the international market and ‘under recovery’ (selling oil at a lower price than the cost), oil marketing companies were facing huge losses of about ₹ 1,000 crore every day. According to estimates, this total under-recovery is expected to reach approximately ₹1.98 lakh crore, of which the loss in just one quarter is around ₹1 lakh crore.

The Petroleum Minister also underlined that the prices of crude oil in the global market, which were earlier stable at around $64-65 per barrel, had increased to a dangerous level of around $115 per barrel. He said that India was the only major country in the world that had not allowed fuel prices to increase since 2022 despite a prolonged global crisis, but in view of the current market anomalies, it had become mandatory to revise prices to keep oil companies financially strong.
