Why did oil prices become expensive recently?
There has been a significant increase in the prices of petrol and diesel in the domestic market in recent times. There was a major revision in fuel prices on May 15, 2026, under which the prices of both petrol and diesel were increased by Rs 3 per liter directly, and even after that the prices were seen increasing several times.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, while clarifying the global reasons behind this price increase, had said that due to the sharp rise in the prices of crude oil in the international market, there is huge pressure on oil companies for under-recovery (selling at less than cost). Due to this situation, oil marketing companies were incurring huge financial losses of around Rs 1,000 crore every day, due to which the total under-recovery was estimated to reach around Rs 1.98 lakh crore.
According to the Petroleum Minister, the quarterly loss of companies alone had reached around Rs 1 lakh crore. On the other hand, crude oil prices also increased from the earlier low of $64-$65 per barrel to around $115 per barrel at one time. Although India had kept fuel prices from increasing for a long time after the year 2022 and had given relief to consumers, but due to this severe recession and pressure in the global market, it finally became necessary to increase the prices partially in the last few days.
