Who is taking petrol and diesel from the pumps?

The government has also given an answer to this question. According to the government, the real problem is not fuel shortage but ‘arbitrage’. This means that some industrial customers are buying from petrol pumps to take advantage of cheaper retail fuel. The government has said that state-owned oil companies are not passing the full burden of rising international crude oil prices on to consumers. This is why retail prices have remained relatively low.

The government has said that sales of high-speed diesel (HSD) by private oil companies fell by around 38% this month. This is because consumers are now buying more from the pumps of state-owned oil companies. Similarly, wholesale supply by public sector companies has also declined by approximately 29%, as demand shifts to retail outlets.

The central government has asked the states and Union Territories to set up special investigation teams to crack down on black market, curb illegal storage of oil and strictly monitor fuel misuse. This action will be taken under ESMA. The government has urged people to trust only official information and ignore rumors about shortages of petrol and diesel. With the international situation being closely monitored, fuel supply in the country is completely normal.
