A homestay on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has been ordered to suspend operations due to violations related to price listing and guest registration, following complaints from foreign tourists who did not get to stay in rooms they had booked in advance.
The suspension came after Pierre, a 65-year-old Canadian man, and a French couple complained about not getting to stay at the Your House PQ 2 homestay in An Thoi Ward for New Year’s Eve although they had paid in advance. When they arrived they were told it was fully booked.
During an inspection on Jan. 3, Phu Quoc authorities found that the establishment lacked a security and order certificate, failed to publicly display its regulations, did not list room prices, and had not registered guest occupancy.
Tran Duc Sy, a representative of Your House PQ 2, confirmed that on Dec. 31, three foreign guests arrived to check in at the homestay after booking through the Agoda app.
The homestay had sold out rooms at the time but had not yet closed availability on Agoda, causing the app to continue showing rooms as available. As a result, when the guests arrived, Sy was unable to provide the rooms as booked.
The homestay offered to relocate the three guests to another accommodation at half price. However, Pierre remained dissatisfied and left the following day.
Pierre said he would never return to Phu Quoc.
Sy said he sent a message apologizing to the Canadian tourist on Jan. 1 for the negative experience.
Phu Quoc was a booming destination during this year’s New Year holiday, with 99% of hotel rooms sold out, and many hotel agents refusing last-minute bookings.
In 2025 the island receives an estimated 8.1 million tourists including 1.8 million foreigners.
