Picture of T20 World Cup 2028 clear, Super-8 teams got direct entry pass

After the completion of the selection of teams for the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, the International Cricket Council has also clarified the list of teams that will qualify directly for the next T20 World Cup to be held in 2028. Being the co-hosts of the tournament, the places of the teams of Australia and New Zealand were already assured.

Which teams entered and achieved

Now other strong teams that reached the Super-8 in the 2026 edition, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have also secured direct entry into the 2028 World Cup on the basis of their performance.

Apart from this, on the basis of ICC T20 International ranking, qualification of three more teams Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland for the next edition is also considered almost certain. According to the ICC, there is no possibility of any change in the current ranking of these teams as they have no international matches scheduled till March 9, 2026. The official announcement will be made after the final. In this way, a total of 12 teams have become eligible to play directly in the 2028 World Cup, while the remaining eight teams will be selected through qualifier matches held in the coming two years.

Super-8 phase starts from 21st February

The Super-8 stage of the current T20 World Cup 2026 will start from February 21. The picture of the teams making it to the Super-8 became completely clear when Pakistan defeated Namibia by a big margin. In this phase the teams are divided into two groups. Group-A includes India, West Indies, Zimbabwe and South Africa, while Group-B includes Pakistan, New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka.

The first match of Super-8 will be played between New Zealand and Pakistan at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India will play its first match against South Africa at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In this stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals. The semi-final matches will be played on 4 and 5 March. One semi-final will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, while the venue of the other semi-final will depend on the performance of Pakistan. If Pakistan reaches the next round then the match can be held at Eden Gardens in Colombo or Kolkata. This tournament will also affect the preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup and the balance of global cricket.
