Pilot project started in steel sector under National Green Hydrogen Mission Gujarati

New Delhi: Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Central Government has approved three pilot projects for the use of hydrogen in steel production. Earlier, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had released guidelines for implementation of pilot projects in the steel sector under this mission.

The objective of the scheme was to identify advanced technologies for using green hydrogen in steel making through pilot projects. This pilot project can demonstrate the safe and secure operation of green hydrogen based steelmaking processes, validate the technical feasibility and performance.

Can evaluate their economic feasibility leading to the production of low carbon iron and steel. Accordingly, proposals were invited for three components (i) to produce DRI using 100% hydrogen using vertical shaft, (ii) to reduce coal/coke consumption, (iii) use of hydrogen in blast furnace and (iii) injection of hydrogen in vertical shaft based DRI production unit.

Based on the evaluation of the proposals received, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has approved a total of three pilot projects in the steel sector (a) Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd. (consortium member Gensol Engineering Ltd., an Indian concern) for a pilot plant Capacity Technology, Bhubaneswar, Metz AB, Sweden) 50 Tonnes Per Day (TPD), (b) Simplex Castings Ltd. (Consortium Member BSBK Private Limited) has been approved. Pilot plant capacity 40 TPD and (c) Investment with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAILT), IIT Bhilai. Will be given in the form of financial assistance. Rs. from Government of India. These pilot projects worth Rs 347 crore are likely to be started in the next three years, which will pave the way for the expansion of such technology in India.
