Piyush Chawla Reckons Shami Still Injured: Former Indian Cricketer Piyush Chawla believes that the Indian Cricket Team management made the correct decision when they decided not to pick Mohammed Shami in the playing XI for the first T20I against England, believing that the pacer is still recovering from his long spell with injury.

Shami, an all-format regular for the national team, has not donned the Indian blue since the 2023 ODI World Cup, after an amazing performance in that competition. For an ankle injury, he received in the World Cup, the fast bowler underwent surgery later that year.

Following the surgery began the long process of rehab and recovery. Shami, while recording, missed the 2024 IPL, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and countless crucial series throughout the series.

Over a year after the 2023 WC, the 34-year-old made his return to professional cricket, taking seven wickets for Bengaln in his return to Ranji Trophy. Since then, he has played in the Syed Mushtaq Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well.

But, there is still concern about his injuries. During his recent spell in domestic cricket, Shami still suffered some complications regarding his ankle injury. Most notably, he felt swelling in his left ankle while playing, a sign that the injury might not have fully healed.

Now, during the ongoing T20I series against England, Mohammed Shami has made his long-awaited Indian Cricket Team return as he was picked in the squad, not only for the three-match series but also the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, before the match, the veteran bowler was limping while bowling in the nets. For this reason or some other, Shami was not in the playing XI for the first T20I against the Three Lions.

Piyush Chawla, who is a former World Cup winner with India, believes that not playing Shami was the correct decision by the Indian Team management, head coach Gautam Gambhir and his coaching team. Speaking to Star Sports about the Shami exclusion from the XI, Chawla said,

“If you see the run-up, he is still limping a bit. The main target should be Champions Trophy, and getting fit for that. Lots of matches in this series, even if he misses a few games, that is okay.”

It is not only Mohammed Shami’s injury that puts his place in the CT 2025 squad in question, but Jasprit Bumrah, after a magical summer Down Under, is out with an injury as well.

As for the first India vs England T20I, the Men in Blue thrashed England by seven wickets, chasing the small target of 133 down within 13 overs Abhishek Sharma scored 79 off 34 while Varun Chakravarthy gave a Player of the Match performance with a spell of 3/23.
