New Delhi: Railway passengers being accompanied by their friends or family to the railway station who are there to drop them at the platform, must ensure that they adhere to the railways’ rules to avoid undue fines. The Indian Railways plans to halt platform ticket sales from October 26 to November 6, 2024, in a bid to declutter railway stations.
The moratorium on platform ticket sales will be applicable during the festivals of Diwali, Govardhan Puja and Bhaiya Dooj. Platform ticket sales will also remain halted for Chhath Puja.
Platform ticket sales halted
Platform ticket sales have been halted at the following railway stations in Delhi-NCR, according to an official notification:

If an individual is caught on the platform without a platform ticket they are liable to pay a fine of Rs 250 and Rs 10 additional platform ticket fee. The platform ticket will be duly checked by railway ticket checkers, the Dainik Jagran reported.

Indian Railways’ Prayagraj division earns a fortune from platform tickets
The Indian Railways’ Prayagraj division raised Rs 64 lakh in 3 months from the sale of platform tickets, the HT reported. These earnings were recorded from December 2023 to February 2024, according to the report. Platform tickets cost Rs 10 each and carry a 2-hour validity. Platform ticket prices have risen progressively from Rs 3 each to Rs 5 each.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian Railways hiked platform ticket fees to Rs 50 each to prevent undue crowding at stations. This was moderated to Rs 10 each post-pandemic.
Centre clear Rs 6,700 crore for rail infra in Bihar, Andhra
The Centre on Thursday cleared the decks for railway infrastructure in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. The Centre allocated funds worth Rs 6,798 crore for the expansion of railway infrastructure in the 2 states. While Bihar is ruled by the Narendra Modi government’s political ally Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), Andhra Pradesh is ruled by Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP party.
