Players appreciate HIL for financial strength and exposure: Jagbir Singh

The late 80s and the early 90s were a rather frustrating period for Indian hockey.

Caught in the midst of evolving playing styles and the emergence of new European powers, the nation struggled to stamp its authority.

It was during this period that Jagbir Singh plied his trade as a centre forward, donning India colours at two Olympics (1988 and 1992), the 1990 World Cup, two Asian Games (1986 and 1990) and the 1989 Asia Cup and Champions trophy.

During his heydays, Singh earned the moniker ‘Striking-circle assassin‘ for his lethal fleet-footed scoring ability. When he hung up his boots, coaching and thereafter broadcasting, ensured that he stayed connected with the game.

And now, Singh returns to the dugout, this time as a member of Team Gonasika’s coaching staff for the 2024-25 Hockey India League (HIL).

‘Players appreciate the platform’

Singh, speaking exclusively to Readdoesn’t hesitate when asked about the impact a league such as the HIL has on the players.

“Both Indian and international players appreciate the platform made available by the HIL,” he said, while recalling how the players missed the league over the past seven years.

According to Singh, the HIL adds value to players on several accounts, with the foremost being its positioning as a top-flight competition where players can stake a claim for the national squad.

And needless to say, the financial perks come in handy as well.

“Via the HIL, players can strengthen themselves financially and rub shoulders with their icons,” said Singh.

Notwithstanding the perks, the competition itself is expected to be stiff.

So, what brand of hockey can the fans expect from Team Gonasika?

Revington-inspired approach

“We’ve picked a combination of youth and experience and this is working well for us from what we’ve seen so far,” asserted Singh.

His reference is that of youngsters like Amir Ali and Araijeet Singh Hundal, who will be ably supported by seniors such as Mandeep Sing and SV Sunil.

As per Singh, the squad will benefit immensely from Paul Revington, the head coach.

“Paul Revington has brought a revolution in English hockey. He introduced a new form of hockey in the England team and infused a new lease of life in their hockey.”

As coaches, Singh says everything in their capacity is being done and that will reflect on the ground over a period of time.

With that being said, what then, is the mood in the Team Gonasika camp?

A buoyant camp

Despite the franchise being aligned to Vizag, Singh recognizes the impact of the players from Odhisha in the squad given the games being played at Rourkela.

“We have local flavour in the form of local stars from Odisha – Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Dipsan Tirkey and Anmol Ekka. So local support will naturally be there,” he said.

With the state having produced several quality players of the years, Singh believes the locals will rally behind the team.

“People here understand hockey and the state has produced several hockey players and they have an attachment with the sport. The quality of hockey that people will get to see, it will be a welcome sight.”

And with Hockey India deciding to not charge a fee for the tickets, he expects stands to be packed.

“Because when people will come to the stadium without any restrictions or financial burden, its difference will be seen,” he opined.

With a seemingly balanced squad mentored by a quality coaching staff and stands expected to be packed, what is his message to the team?

Without a moment’s hesitation, Singh responds – “Go Go Gonasika.”
