PM Modi and Iran President talk on phone, discuss movement of ships in Hormuz Strait, India gets special invitation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on phone to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. During this, PM Modi stressed on maintaining freedom of movement of ships in Hormuz Strait. He also welcomed the progress made in the ongoing talks between Iran and the US.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), it was said that PM Modi described the importance of Hormuz Strait as very important for both the world and India. He said that to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region, all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

During the conversation, President Pezeshkian informed the Prime Minister about the latest situation in West Asia and future plans. The President has also invited PM Modi for the funeral ceremony of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This program will run from 5 to 9 July and India is preparing to send its representatives to it.

This discussion took place at a time when on June 25, 2026, Iran’s IRGC Navy had announced that ships can pass through the Hormuz Strait only on routes decided by Iran. Iran had warned that moving outside the designated routes would be dangerous and prohibited.

Earlier in April 2026, President Pezeshkian had said that any threat to the security of the Strait of Hormuz would be bad for global trade, although he also talked about following international law. Also, in March 2026, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had refuted social media claims that Iran had refused to give way to Indian ships.
