PM Modi calls meeting: Petrol, electricity and fertilizer supply review

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a high-level ministerial meeting after increasing tension in West Asia. Ensuring uninterrupted supply of petroleum, power and fertilizer and sustainability of logistics were discussed in the meeting.

New Delhi: The Central Government of India has increased vigilance amid the ongoing tension and conflict in West Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a ministerial-level meeting on Sunday evening, in which the situation in the petroleum, power and fertilizer sectors will be reviewed. The objective of this meeting is to ensure uninterrupted supply of these essential goods and services in the country. Also, focus will be on sustainability of logistics and efficient delivery. The Government has clarified that global developments are being continuously monitored to protect the interests of consumers and industries.

Energy crisis and global impact

Prime Minister Modi had said on March 12 that the ongoing war in West Asia has created an energy crisis across the world. Dealing with this crisis is challenging for both national security and the economy. He said that peace, patience and increasing public awareness is very important at this time. PM Modi also informed that his government is making continuous efforts to remove bottlenecks in international supply chains. The supply chains are being reviewed and necessary steps are being taken to ensure availability of petroleum, power and fertilizers in the country.

Objective and strategy of the meeting

Mainly three important areas will be discussed in the meeting. First, to ensure continuous supply of petroleum and fuel. Second, to control the availability and distribution of electricity. Third, to remove any hindrance in fertilizer production and distribution. For this, the government has intensified monitoring of the logistics network and cooperation has also been sought from the states. High officials and experts from the ministries have been included in the meeting so that any problem in the supply system can be resolved immediately.

PM Modi’s global diplomatic initiative

Since the conflict started in West Asia, Prime Minister Modi has talked to many Gulf countries and international leaders. He has held phone discussions with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France, Malaysia, Israel and Iran. The main objective of these discussions has been to maintain regional stability and protect India’s energy interests. The Prime Minister also ensured that India’s supply chain is not affected amid the conflict and stocks of essential commodities remain safe.

Strait of Hormuz and the strategic challenge

Iran has recently retaliated against Israel and some neighboring Gulf countries. The Strait of Hormuz is an important shipping route in the region, through which about 20 percent of the world’s energy is transported. Due to the conflict, Iran has allowed only a limited number of ships to pass through this route. This has increased uncertainty in the global energy market and India may also have to face possible impacts.

Security of supply chains

In the meeting, officials have been instructed to take immediate measures in case of any disruption in the supply of petroleum, electricity and fertilizer. Maintaining stock of these essential commodities across the country and speeding up the distribution process will be the priority. Along with this, international markets and global events will be continuously monitored.
