PM Modi cuts down his convoy, several chief ministers follow suit

PM maintained necessary security arrangements

New Delhi. Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to reduce the use of fuel-powered vehicles and adopt austerity measures, the number of vehicles in his convoy has been significantly reduced. Following the Prime Minister’s call, Chief Ministers of many BJP ruled states have also taken a similar step and reduced the number of vehicles in their convoy.

Official sources said the number of vehicles in the Prime Minister’s convoy has been reduced during his recent domestic visits. However, necessary security arrangements have been maintained as per the Special Protection Group (SPG) protocols. Soon after the Prime Minister’s speech on austerity measures in Hyderabad on Sunday, the number of cars in his convoy was reduced in Gujarat and Assam.

Sources also said that the Prime Minister has given instructions to include electric vehicles in his fleet wherever possible without purchasing new vehicles. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed to immediately halve the number of vehicles traveling in the convoy of himself and state ministers. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also reduced the number of vehicles in his convoy. In the cabinet meeting held on Monday, Chief Minister Yadav appealed to the members of the Council of Ministers to reduce the consumption of petrol and diesel in the national interest and stressed on promoting the use of public transport.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has also directed to reduce the number of government vehicles used by ministers, MLAs and other public representatives. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has directed to keep the number of vehicles in his convoy to a minimum, after which only five vehicles were seen in his convoy on Wednesday. The Maharashtra government has directed all ministers to seek permission from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis before using aircraft for official travel.

Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat announced that he would travel in Gujarat using trains, state transport buses and public transport resources instead of helicopters and planes and his convoy of government vehicles would also be shortened to save fuel. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary announced that he himself has reduced the number of vehicles in his convoy to half and will undertake official visits only when necessary.
