PM Modi’s visit to Jordan: 75 year old relationship will get new strength, special focus on trade
India Jordan trade focus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going on a two-day official visit to Jordan on 15 and 16 December. This visit is taking place on the historic occasion of completion of 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. India’s Ambassador to Jordan Manish Chauhan expressed confidence that the visit will take the already strong multi-dimensional partnership to greater heights. This visit is considered very important with the aim of accelerating dialogue on bilateral, regional and global issues.
Celebrating 75 years of historic relationship
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Amman on the invitation of King Abdullah II of Jordan. Ambassador Manish Chauhan described the visit as an important milestone in India-Jordan relations as it marks the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He said that this visit will give a new momentum and direction to bilateral relations, which will further strengthen the partnership. The Ambassador expressed hope that the visit will be highly successful and will further deepen the relations between the two countries.
High level meetings and economic agenda
Prime Minister Modi’s schedule is going to be very busy during the two-day visit. He will hold delegation-level talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II. Apart from this, he is also proposed to meet Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II. On arrival in Amman he will be formally welcomed by the Prime Minister of Jordan.
According to Ambassador Chauhan, one of the main objectives of the visit is to increase economic cooperation. The Prime Minister will participate in a special session with leading Jordanian industrialists and business representatives. India is already one of the major trading partners of Jordan and the bilateral trade between the two countries is reaching approximately $3 billion, with immense potential to increase it further. Fertilizers are imported from Jordan to India, which is important for India’s food security.
Culture and people-to-people ties
Apart from diplomatic and economic discussions, the visit will also focus on cultural ties. Prime Minister Modi will visit the historical city of Petra in Jordan along with Crown Prince Hussein. This step underlines the civilizational and cultural connect between the two countries.
The Ambassador addressed the ‘Friends of India’ He also mentioned the (Friends of India) group, which includes many Jordanians who have studied in India and maintain personal and professional ties even today. Prime Minister Modi may also meet the Indian expatriate community living in Jordan, which is actively contributing there. The introduction of direct flights by Royal Jordanian Airlines has further strengthened contacts between the two countries, which is expected to increase tourism and cultural exchanges in the future.
