PM Modi leaves for New Zealand after Australia tour, partnership strengthened by historic agreements on defence, nuclear energy and trade

Melbourne: Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for New Zealand on Friday after completing his three-day visit to Australia. During the visit, historic agreements were agreed between India and Australia in many important areas including defense cooperation, civil nuclear energy, maritime security, critical minerals, education and economic partnership.

Prime Minister Modi is currently on a tour of three countries: Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The objective of this visit is to give new strength to trade, energy, investment and defense cooperation.

Said thanks to Australia

After leaving Australia, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude on the social media platform ‘X’ for the hospitality of the government, its citizens and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He said that this visit has given new momentum to the strategic partnership of the two countries and has opened doors to many new cooperative opportunities.

Foreign Ministry told the achievements of the trip

The Ministry of External Affairs said that this visit will further strengthen the India-Australia comprehensive strategic partnership. According to the ministry, defense cooperation, economic relations, education, sports and people-to-people contacts between the two countries have taken a new direction.

Now the focus will be on New Zealand tour

Prime Minister Modi will reach Auckland on the last leg of his tour, where he will hold bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. During this period there will be special discussions on trade, investment, economic cooperation and strengthening commercial relations. The Prime Minister will also address the Indian community.

The Prime Minister had earlier said that this visit will play an important role in taking forward the positive momentum in relations between the two countries after Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025.

Major achievements of Australia tour

In the summit talks held between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his visit to Australia, emphasis was laid on maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The two countries particularly agreed to further strengthen maritime security and defense cooperation.

The civil nuclear energy cooperation agreement was finalized after nearly two years of negotiations. Under this, Australia will supply uranium to India on a commercial basis, which India will use in its nuclear energy projects.

Earlier, during his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Modi had signed 14 agreements to increase cooperation in critical minerals, maritime security and other areas.
