PM Modi met the winners of Chess Olympiad, Praggnanandhaa and Erigesi played a game in front of PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India's young chess players for their historic achievement at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Both India's men's and women's teams won gold medals at this prestigious competition in Budapest, Hungary. PM Modi met both the men's and women's teams at his residence.

India created history on Sunday when the men's team defeated Slovenia in the final round while the women's team defeated Azerbaijan to win the gold medal at the Chess Olympiad for the first time. In the men's competition, D Gukesh, Arjun Erigesi and R Praggnanandhaa won for India in the 11th and final round.

In a video shared on social media, PM Modi can be seen talking to chess champions like R Vaishali, D Harika, Tania Sachdev, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigesi and Praggnanandhaa. He played a key role in India's title win by winning 10 out of 11 games in the open category.

During the interaction, the players presented a chess board to the Prime Minister after which Praggnanandhaa and Erigesi played a game of chess which left Prime Minister Modi spellbound. Earlier, the Sports Ministry shared a video in which the Indian chess contingent can be seen leaving their hotel to meet the Prime Minister. The Indian men's team scored 21 out of a possible 22 points in Budapest and defeated all their opponents except for playing only one draw (2-2) against Uzbekistan.

Congratulations were posted on the victory

PM Modi congratulated both the teams through a post on Christmas on Saturday and said that the historic success of both the teams is a new chapter in Indian sports. He said, 'India's historic victory. Our chess team won the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad. He wrote, 'India has won the gold medal in both the open and women's categories in the Chess Olympiad. Congratulations to our brilliant men's and women's chess teams. This remarkable achievement adds a new chapter to Indian sports. Hopefully this success will inspire generations of chess lovers to excel in the game.'
