On this occasion, the PM stressed that modern India no longer just waits for disasters, but prepares a ‘strategic framework’ in advance to deal with them. What is an emergency landing strip and why is it important? It is a specially designed part of the highway, which can be used for the landing and take-off of fighter planes of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in case of war or emergency. Second circle of security: In case of war In case the enemy targets our main air base, these highway runways act as ‘backup’ for the Air Force. Quick action: Due to the presence of these strips in the border areas, the army and logistics can be transported to the front in a very short time. Dual use: On normal days, this part remains open to the general public as a national highway, but if needed, it can be converted into a runway within a few minutes. Indian Air Force’s ‘show of power’ During the inauguration, state-of-the-art fighter aircraft like Sukhoi-30 and Jaguar conducted touch-and-go exercises on the strip. It has become one of the few highways in India where the Air Force is able to land its aircraft.
