Addressing a press conference, Prime Minister Modi said, “Today many major countries are struggling with fuel shortages. But India’s efforts have been a major relief from this crisis. It was going to cause a big crisis in the country – Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Modi said, “About 60 per cent of our LPG requirement was imported from other countries and 90 per cent of this LPG was coming from the Gulf countries and through me. Suddenly, due to the war situation, that supply almost stopped.” You can imagine the extent of the crisis that would arise in our country. But as the crisis hit, the government focused on refining capacity. They were asked to convert the gas used for industrial purposes into cooking gas and the production of LPG increased within seven days.
Prime Minister Modi said the country’s LPG production, which was earlier 35,000 metric tonnes, increased to 54,000 metric tonnes during the crisis. Even refineries which had never produced LPG before have now been equipped to do so. “A campaign was launched to increase the number of PNG connections, i.e. piped cooking gas connections. In a very short span of time, India provided PNG gas connections to more than 11 lakh households,” he added, so that the entire burden of cooking gas demand does not fall on LPG.
Cylinder prices could have gone up to ₹2,000 – PM Modi
The Prime Minister said, “On the other hand, domestic consumers have not been burdened much. In the current scenario, the price of a domestic gas cylinder could have gone up to ₹2,000. Leading market experts were predicting that, but domestic LPG cylinders are still being sold at low prices. Two days ago, the government also significantly reduced the price of commercial gas.” This shows how sensitive our government is working.”
Regarding the prices of petrol and diesel, Prime Minister Modi said, “Due to the war, the crisis of diesel and petrol was also huge. Our country does not have big oil wells. As this crisis escalated, crude oil prices increased from $70 per barrel to $120 per barrel. The import routes were also closed. Diesel and petrol prices increased by 40 to 50 percent in many countries around the world. In many countries, diesel and petrol became available on quota basis. Only between April and June, diesel and petrol were sold. The companies suffered a loss of over Rs 75,000 crore.”
