PM Modi raises safety of seafarers in Strait Of Hormuz at G7 summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted concerns over the safety of seafarers and maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz during discussions at the G7 Summitdrawing attention to the risks faced by commercial shipping in the strategically vital waterway. The remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following recent attacks on commercial vessels.
The issue has gained prominence in India after the deaths of three Indian seafarers aboard the commercial tanker MT Settebellowhich was struck near the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman last week. The incident triggered strong diplomatic reactions from New Delhi and renewed calls for the protection of civilian shipping routes.
Addressing global leaders at the summit, Modi underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of merchant vessels and international shipping lanes, particularly in conflict-prone regions that are critical to global trade and energy supplies.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, handling a significant share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to navigation in the region has far-reaching implications for international commerce and energy markets.
Incident Involving Indian Seafarers

According to Indian authorities, 21 crew members were rescuedwhile the three missing seafarers were later confirmed dead. The attack occurred during a period of heightened military activity linked to tensions involving Iran and shipping movements through the Gulf.
India Calls For Safe Navigation
The Indian government has repeatedly stressed the need for safe and uninterrupted maritime movement in the region. Officials have also expressed concern over the security of thousands of Indian seafarers working aboard merchant vessels operating in Gulf waters.
With more than 18,000 Indian seafarers currently working in the Gulf region, maritime safety has emerged as a significant concern for New Delhi amid continuing regional instability.
Focus On Diplomatic Solutions
India has advocated dialogue and de-escalation following the recent incidents, maintaining that attacks on commercial vessels and civilian maritime infrastructure must cease. The issue is expected to remain part of broader discussions on regional security and international trade during the G7 summit.
