PM Modi says BJP will end ‘Mafia Rule’ in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a huge public gathering in Asansol, West Bengal, reiterating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) pledge to bring change in the state and accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of betraying the people over decades of governance. Modi’s speech formed a key part of his campaign across West Bengal on Thursday, with public meetings also held in Haldia and Siuri.

Modi emphasised that the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election is a battle to “free ourselves from the rule of the mafia,” asserting that only a BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government can accomplish this. He pointed to West Bengal’s past political shifts from the Congress to the Left Front and then to the TMC, claiming that each had failed to deliver on promises and had disappointed the aspirations of the people.

At the rally in the industrial belt of Paschim Bardhaman, Modi highlighted recent and ongoing infrastructure and connectivity projects that the central government has supported in the region. He cited investments aimed at boosting industrialisation, including expansion of the region’s steel sector, and mentioned strides made in improving energy and transport linkages — moves pitched by the BJP as evidence of its development focus.

Modi told the gathering that despite challenges and “thousands of hurdles,” the central government remains committed to development in the area. He pointed to work on railway connectivity, including campaign references to Vande Bharat trains and railway station modernisation schemes, and broader national initiatives aimed at reinforcing multimodal transport and logistics.

These comments are part of a wider campaign strategy by the BJP to consolidate gains in areas where it has established support and to make inroads in regions traditionally dominated by the TMC. The prime minister’s remarks underscore the party’s message that governance, infrastructure, and economic opportunity should drive voter decisions in the run‑up to polling days on April 23 and April 29, 2026.
