New Delhi: In Budget 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a big step in the defense sector. This year the defense budget has been increased by about 15% and the total budget has now reached Rs 7.85 lakh crore. This amount is much more than last year’s Rs 6.81 lakh crore.

Prime Minister Modi said that this increase has been done keeping in mind the preparedness and modern needs of the army. A large part of the budget has been kept for the purchase of weapons and modernization of the army, so that India remains fully capable of meeting its security challenges.

Emphasis on Rafale and indigenous weapons

India confirmed the Rs 3.25 lakh crore Rafale deal with France in January. Under this, the Indian Air Force will get 114 Rafale jets. This purchase will be among the largest and strategic purchases in Indian defense history. Also, the budget has been increased by 28% to strengthen modern weapons and technology in the country’s army.

The Prime Minister said that due to the country’s strong manufacturing and MSME sector, India is now making free trade agreements with 38 countries. Due to this, small and medium businesses are getting opportunities in the international market. Modi also said that now the country is presenting its views on the global platform not out of compulsion but with a strategic approach and confidence.

New opportunities in AI

The Prime Minister stressed on increasing investment from the private sector and preparing for leadership in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector. After the success of Digital India and UPI, now lakhs of employment opportunities are being created for the youth by increasing data centers and computing power. In the end, Prime Minister Modi said that private sector participation in reform and development will be the main axis of the country’s progress.
