Know what is Godhra incident
On February 27, 2002, a bogie of the Sabarmati Express train that had departed from Godhra station in Gujarat was set on fire by a frenzied mob, resulting in the death of 59 people. The Sabarmati Express going towards Ahmedabad had just left Godhra station when someone pulled the chain and stopped the train, and then after pelting stones, a coach of the train was set on fire. The people on board the train were Hindu pilgrims and were returning from Ayodhya. After this incident, communal violence broke out in many areas of Gujarat, in which hundreds of people died. The army had to be called to control the situation. FIR was registered against 1,500 people in this case. POTA was imposed on those arrested in the train burning case.
