PM Shehbaz Sharif Slashes Petrol Prices & Freezes Ministers’ Salaries Amid Massive Public Outcry:
In a dramatic turn of events, the Pakistan government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharifhas announced a significant reduction in fuel prices. This move comes at a time when the country is battling record-breaking inflation and immense pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). To lead by example, the government has also taken a “surgical” decision regarding the perks of its own ministers.
Relief at the Pump: New Petrol & Diesel Rates
After months of back-to-back hikes, the Shehbaz administration has finally cut petrol prices by several rupees per liter. This decision is seen as a desperate attempt to pacify the angry public, who have been struggling with the high cost of living. The finance ministry stated that the global dip in oil prices allowed the government to pass some benefits to the ‘Awaam’.
Austerity Drive: Ministers to Work Without Pay?
In a move that has surprised many, PM Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a freeze on the salaries and allowances of all federal ministers and advisors. This austerity measure is aimed at saving the national exchequer billions of rupees.
“The ruling elite must share the burden of the common man. We cannot ask the public to sacrifice while we enjoy state luxuries,” a government spokesperson remarked.
The IMF Factor and Economic Stability
Despite this relief, experts suggest that Pakistan’s economic road remains rocky. The country is still in deep negotiations for a new multi-billion dollar bailout package from the IMF. While the petrol price cut provides temporary breathing room, the government remains under strict mandate to increase tax collection and reduce the fiscal deficit.
Public Reaction: Genuine Relief or Political Stunt?
While many citizens have welcomed the lower fuel rates, the opposition has labeled it a “temporary bandage” on a deep wound. With the inflation rate still hovering at dangerous levels, the real test for the Sharif government will be maintaining these prices without further devaluing the Pakistani Rupee (PKR).
