Political drama went on all day in Assam Congress: Bhupen Bora resigned, why did he take a U-turn within a few hours? know the whole story
Guwahati. A big upheaval was seen in the politics of Assam on Monday. Former state Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora withdrew his decision within hours of resigning. The resignation in the morning and return by evening created a stir in political circles. This is being linked to the ongoing tussle within Assam Congress and increasing activism at the leadership level.
It was told that Bhupen Bora had sent his resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. In his resignation letter, he said that he was ignored and not respected. However, later AICC state in-charge Jitendra Singh informed that after the intervention of the party high command, Bora decided to withdraw his resignation. This U-turn happened after several rounds of talks and consultations.
Gathering of leaders, round of meetings-
As soon as the news of resignation came out, a crowd of Congress leaders gathered at Bora’s residence in Guwahati. Many senior leaders including state president Gaurav Gogoi and representatives of allied parties came to meet him. After meetings that lasted throughout the day, sources said Bora was assured of important responsibilities in the organization. After this he made it clear that he would remain in the party and continue working for the organization.
This rapid development clearly indicated that the party wanted to avoid a breakdown at any cost.
BJP’s attack-
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a sharp attack on Congress on this entire episode. He said that Bora’s resignation is an indication of the internal situation of the Congress. Sarma claimed that Bora was the last big Hindu leader of Congress who was neither an MLA nor a minister. He alleged that leaders coming from ordinary backgrounds do not get a chance to move ahead in Congress. However, he also clarified that Bora did not approach him to join BJP.
What are the political implications?
Bhupen Bora was the state president of Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025 and is credited with strengthening the organization at the grassroots level. His resignation and return indicate that there is dissatisfaction within the party, but for the time being a major crisis has been averted.
Chief Minister Sarma has claimed that some Congress MLAs may leave the party in the coming time, while the Congress says that the organization is completely united. This development is being seen as a big sign in the politics of Assam before the assembly elections.
