Political storm in Bangladesh! Big protest march announced in Dhaka today, allegations of rigging in elections

Dhaka: Before the formation of the new government in Bangladesh, the political atmosphere has once again heated up. After the election results, on one hand the ruling party is busy preparing to form the government, while on the other hand the opposition parties are preparing to take to the streets. A big protest march has been announced in the capital Dhaka on Monday, which may further increase political tension.

A coalition of 11 parties led by Jamaat-e-Islami has called a protest march alleging rigging and irregularities in the 13th National Parliament elections. This march will be taken out in Dhaka, in which leaders and workers of the alliance will participate. Both Jamaat and National Citizen Party (NCP) have raised questions on the election process. He says that serious irregularities took place during voting and counting, which affected the results of many seats.

Claim of irregularities in vote counting

NCP leader Nahid Islam alleged that at least 10 percent of the votes were manipulated. He said that the results were changed by targeting certain constituencies. He made this statement after the meeting of 11 parties and demanded an impartial investigation from the Election Commission.

The main opposition party Jamaat-e-Islami has also demanded recounting of votes in 32 constituencies. The party says that its candidates were defeated unfairly. Interestingly, immediately after the elections, the party had issued a message accepting the victory of BNP, but later withdrew it.

Political meetings before government formation

Amidst these allegations and announcements of protest, Tariq Rehman met Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rehman and NCP leader Nahid Islam on Sunday. BNP has described these meetings as the beginning of positive political dialogue. This meeting took place at a time when BNP is going to form the government after two days. It is believed that efforts are on to create political balance before the new government.

BNP’s spectacular victory

BNP performed brilliantly in the recent parliamentary elections. The party got almost 50 percent of the votes and won two-thirds majority by winning 209 seats. On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami also gave its best performance till date and won 68 seats with more than 31 percent votes.
