Politics News- American delegation is coming to India to finalize trade deal, these issues can be resolved
Friends, a big and important deal is going to happen in Indian political and trade history, because very soon India and America are going to enter an important phase in the trade history, because senior officials of both the countries are starting discussions for four days from June 1 to June 4. It is hoped that these talks will pave the way for finalizing a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement, let us know what is going to happen in these 4 days-
Chief negotiator will lead the discussion
The US delegation will be led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while the Indian team will be led by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce. The main focus of the talks will be on resolving outstanding issues and finalizing the framework of the proposed trade deal.
Main areas of bilateral trade agreements (BTA)
According to India’s Commerce Ministry, both sides will hold detailed discussions under the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The talks are expected to cover a number of important areas, including:
Market access for goods and services
Reduction of non-tariff barriers
Customs Procedures and Trade Facilitation
Business and Investment Opportunities
Economic and supply-chain security
Measures to strengthen bilateral trade cooperation
Its objective is to create a comprehensive framework that will facilitate the flow of trade and investment between the two countries.
The framework was agreed upon earlier this year
This current round of talks follows a joint statement issued by India and the US on February 7, in which the two countries finalized the framework for the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement, often referred to as an ‘interim trade deal’.
It is hoped that the upcoming discussions will legalize and advance that framework, thereby reaffirming the trade commitments made by both governments.
Discussion on tariff reduction remains important
As part of the proposed framework, the US had expressed willingness to reduce tariffs imposed on certain Indian goods from 50% to 18%.
Earlier, Washington had lifted the 25% tariff that was imposed in response to India’s purchase of Russian oil. Under the proposed arrangement, the residual tariff burden was expected to be further reduced, making Indian exports more competitive in the US market. Recent US tariff developments
Recent developments in the US have also impacted trade-related discussions:
On February 20, the US Supreme Court struck down the President’s “reciprocal tariffs”. These tariffs were imposed under the ‘International Emergency Economic Powers Act’ (IEEPA) of 1977.
Subsequently, on February 24, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of a temporary tariff of 10% on imports from all countries for a period of 150 days.
These developments have made the ongoing trade negotiations between India and the US even more important.
what to expect next
The talks to be held between June 1 and 4 are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the future of India-US trade relations. If these negotiations are successful, they could result in improved market access, reduced trade barriers, increased investment and strengthened economic cooperation between the two strategic partners.
