New Delhi: Ricky Ponting heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer following his match-winning performance that powered Punjab Kings to a historic victory over Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Punjab chased down a massive target of 265, registering one of the highest successful run chases in T20 history and underlining their strong form this season.
Ponting backs Iyer’s leadership
Speaking after the match, Ponting credited Iyer’s leadership qualities as a key reason behind the franchise’s aggressive bid for him at the IPL auction.
“He’s a great person, and that’s one of the reasons I went as hard as I did for him,” Ponting said, adding that Iyer’s calm presence and ability to finish games make him invaluable.
The former Australian captain revealed that he had personally told Iyer during the chase that if he stayed till the end, Punjab would win — a prediction that proved accurate.
Calm approach in record chase
Despite the daunting target, Punjab Kings displayed remarkable composure throughout the innings. Iyer’s leadership ensured a calm mindset in the dressing room, even after Delhi posted a formidable 264/2.
Delhi’s total was built on a stunning unbeaten 152 by KL Rahul and a blistering 91 from Nitish Rana.
However, Punjab’s response was equally aggressive, with openers launching a rapid start that laid the foundation for the chase.
Strong start sets the tone
Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya gave Punjab a flying start, racing to 126 without loss in just 6.5 overs. Their explosive batting dismantled Delhi’s bowling attack early and shifted momentum decisively.
With the platform set, Iyer anchored the innings with a composed approach, ensuring the required run rate remained under control.
Iyer’s finishing touch
Iyer remained unbeaten on 71 off 36 balls, hitting three fours and seven sixes. His innings stood out for its timing and composure, as he absorbed pressure and guided the team to victory.
While he did get a couple of reprieves — dropped twice by Karun Nair — Iyer capitalised fully, adding crucial runs and ensuring Delhi could not stage a comeback.
Ponting emphasised that Iyer’s ability to stay till the end of a chase is what sets him apart, calling it a defining trait of his game.
Punjab’s strong season continues
The victory further strengthened Punjab Kings’ impressive run in the tournament, with the team remaining unbeaten in five of their six matches so far.
The result not only showcased their batting depth but also highlighted the importance of leadership and belief in high-pressure situations.
Conclusion
Shreyas Iyer’s match-winning knock and composed captaincy have reinforced his value as both a leader and a finisher for Punjab Kings. Backed by Ricky Ponting’s confidence, Iyer continues to play a crucial role in shaping the team’s successful campaign this season.
