Pope Leo XIV came out against Trump, USCCB said that the Pope is not his rival
New Delhi. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has criticized US President Donald Trump’s recent social media comments. Trump had targeted Pope Leo XIV. The USCCB said the Pope is not their rival and should not be viewed from a political perspective. In a statement released Sunday, USCCB President Archbishop Paul S. Coakley expressed disappointment in Trump’s comments, calling them inappropriate and divisive. “I am saddened that the President chose to write such derogatory words about the Holy Father,” the statement said. Pope Leo is not his rival and neither is the Pope a politician. He is a representative of Christ, speaking based on the truth of the gospel and caring for people’s souls.

The comments came as Trump criticized Pope Leo in a social media post on Truth Social, escalating tensions between the US administration and the Vatican. In his post, Trump strongly criticized the Pope for his comments on American foreign policy. In the post, Trump claimed that if he had not been elected as the US President, Pope Leo would not have been appointed the next Pope after the death of Pope Francis. He accused the Pope of being weak on crime and being “very bad for foreign policy.” The US President’s comments come after Pope Leo’s recent criticism of Washington’s approach to global conflicts, including the current tensions over Iran. In this criticism, the Pope called for peace and dialogue. Trump, in his statement on Truth Social, also accused the Pope of taking a soft stance on issues such as Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons and US military action abroad. Defending his administration’s policies, he claimed that he was elected with an overwhelming majority so that he could impose strict law and order measures and pursue an aggressive foreign policy.
