Guwahati: Security agencies have achieved a major success in the campaign against drug and illegal trafficking in India’s north-eastern state of Assam. A joint team of Assam Rifles and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized about 8,764 kg of poppy seeds during a special operation in Cachar district. According to officials, the estimated market value of the seized goods is estimated to be around Rs 1.31 crore.

This action is being considered an important step towards curbing the increasing smuggling activities in the state. Security agencies say the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and may reveal a possible smuggling network.

Campaign conducted on the basis of intelligence information

According to officials, security agencies had received information that a large quantity of poppy seed consignment was going to pass through Cachar district of Assam. After receiving the information, Assam Rifles and DRI jointly started surveillance and kept a special eye on the possible routes.

During this operation conducted on June 21, 2026, a suspicious vehicle was identified in Silchar Bypass Road area. During investigation, a large quantity of poppy seeds were recovered in a truck. The officers immediately seized the vehicle and conducted a detailed search, which confirmed the discovery of thousands of kilograms of poppy seeds. Security agencies said that due to timely action, the consignment was intercepted before it reached its destination.

Two suspects were detained

Two persons have been arrested during the operation. Both the accused are said to be residents of Silchar area of Assam. In the preliminary investigation, he is suspected to be connected to the smuggling network.

Officials said the arrested persons are being interrogated to find out from where the consignment was brought and its final destination. The investigating agencies are also trying to find out whether any big interstate or international trafficking gang is involved in this case.

Two mobile phones have also been seized from the arrested accused. Investigators are analyzing digital data from these devices to trace links to other members of the trafficking network.

Truck and other material also seized

Apart from the consignment of poppy seeds, the security agencies have also seized a Tata truck, which was being used to transport the goods. According to officials, the vehicle has been kept safe for forensic and technical investigation.

The investigation team is also trying to find out who is the owner of the truck and whether the vehicle was intentionally used in smuggling activities or not. Apart from this, the information obtained from the seized mobile phone can play an important role in deciding the direction of the investigation.

Further investigation handed over to DRI

The seized poppy seeds and other evidence have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for further legal action and detailed investigation. DRI will now investigate this entire matter in depth. Officials believe that the recovery of such a large quantity of poppy seeds cannot be just a simple transportation case. The possibility of an organized smuggling network being behind this is not being ruled out. The investigation will also see whether this consignment is related to any group which may be involved in the production or distribution of narcotics.

Challenge of smuggling in North East India

Northeast India has long been considered a vulnerable region for various types of smuggling activities. Due to its proximity to several international borders, there is a possibility of this area being used by smugglers for illegal trade and movement of drugs.

Indian security agencies have increased surveillance in the region in recent years. Special operations are being carried out continuously in border areas, national highways and sensitive transport routes. This has resulted in the uncovering of several large smuggling networks and the seizure of large quantities of illegal goods. Experts believe that coordination between local administration, central agencies and security forces is essential for effective action against trafficking.

Strict stance against organized crime

Indian security agencies have been adopting more aggressive tactics against organized crime and illicit trafficking over the past few years. Smuggling activities are being continuously monitored with the help of modern technology, intelligence system and inter-agency cooperation.

This joint action of Assam Rifles and DRI is being considered as part of this broader strategy. Officials say that the objective of such operations is not only to seize illegal goods but also to break the networks that work behind these activities.

Local security system will be strengthened

This action taken in Cachar district is also considered important for the local security system. The recovery of large quantities of poppy seeds indicates that smuggling activities remain a possibility in the area.

According to experts, if such networks are not caught in time, they can become a challenge to regional security, economic stability and law and order. Therefore, it is necessary to continue such campaigns continuously.

New revelations may emerge from the investigation

Officials believe that after interrogating the arrested accused and analyzing digital evidence, many important information can come to light in this case. The investigating agencies are trying to find out who else was involved in the supply chain of the consignment.

It is expected that other suspects related to this case may also be identified in the coming days. If a large network is confirmed then the scope of investigation can be extended beyond the state boundaries.
