Mumbai 23 December 2025 : (TEAM INDIA) There are plans for a change of leadership in the Indian cricket team. According to sources, due to poor form and disappointing leadership, the captaincy of the one-day team may be withdrawn from Shubman Gill and the movement to appoint experienced player Shreyas Iyer as the new captain in his place has intensified. Recently, many questions were raised regarding Shubman Gill being dropped from the team announced for the upcoming T20 World Cup. In the series against South Africa, Gill could score only 32 runs in three matches. Although he did not play the last matches officially due to injury, but the buzz is that the management had already taken the decision to drop him. Now it is certain that Gill will not play in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Shreyas Iyer is currently the vice-captain of the one-day team and has vast experience of captaincy in domestic cricket including IPL. If Iyer is given the responsibility, he will become India’s 29th ODI captain. Even on social media, fans are now expressing their desire to see Iyer as captain. Gill was made the captain before the series against Australia in October 2025, but under his leadership, India could win only 1 out of 3 matches and lost the series against Australia 2-1. Looking at these statistics and his personal form, his future in all three formats seems to be in danger.
