Post Pregnancy Care Tips: As great as the joy of a little guest coming home, there is an equally big responsibility for the health of the new mother. The first 6 weeks after delivery i.e. about 42 days is called Sutika period. This is the time when the woman’s body is going through the process of its second birth. Experts believe that even minor carelessness during this period can make a woman a victim of chronic diseases and physical weakness in the future.

Why are these 6 weeks critical?

During delivery, a woman’s body loses a huge amount of energy and blood. At this time, Vata dosha increases significantly in the body, which becomes the main cause of joint pain, fatigue, digestive weakness and mental restlessness. These 6 weeks are the recovery window in which the uterus returns to its previous size and the body parts readjust into place.

Massage with Ayurvedic oils is considered mandatory during Sutika period. Lukewarm oil massage not only improves blood circulation but also calms aggravated Vata. This is the most effective way to relieve muscle pain and reduce stress. Light compression after massage helps cleanse the uterus and accelerate recovery.

What should be the diet?

  • During this period, the mother’s digestive system is very weak, hence food should be selected very thoughtfully.
  • Porridge, moong dal khichdi and fresh vegetable soup are the best.
  • Use of cumin, celery, dry ginger and turmeric in limited quantities helps in improving digestion and contraction of the uterus.
  • After delivery, one should completely avoid cold water, stale food, excessive chillies and spices and things that cause gas for at least 40 days.

Breastfeeding and mental health

Mother’s first thick milk is like nectar for a newborn baby. It not only increases the immunity of the child but also creates a deep emotional bond between mother and child. Ayurveda also advises that during this period the mother should stay away from mental stress and noise because the mental state of the mother has a direct impact on the quality of milk and the temperament of the child.

Cleanliness is paramount to prevent infection. Bathing with neem water and using herbal smoke are suggested in Ayurveda to purify the environment and the body. If family support and correct Ayurvedic rules are followed, the mother can regain her lost energy very quickly.
