Praggnanandhaa defeats Carlsen in Norway Chess Round 8, moves near Firouzja

Indian chess player Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu secured a 3-0 victory against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in Round 8 of Norway Chess 2026, bringing him one point behind Alireza Firouzja, who is second on the points table. According to the Norway Chess website, Praggnanandhaa defeated Carlsen playing with the black pieces. The match remained balanced deep into the endgame before Carlsen experienced serious time pressure, which Praggnanandhaa exploited to convert the advantage and strengthen his standing in the title race.

In another significant match, Alireza Firouzja achieved a classical win over World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju. Playing white, Firouzja managed a tense endgame and maintained composure during mutual time pressure to secure a key victory, moving him within a point of tournament leader Wesley So.

The game between Wesley So and Vincent Keymer concluded in a 1.5-1 draw after a closely fought classical match. So subsequently won the Armageddon tiebreak, earning additional points and retaining his lead in the standings.

Following Round 8, Wesley So leads Norway Chess with 14 points, Alireza Firouzja has 13 points, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu holds 12 points, Magnus Carlsen is fifth with nine points, and Gukesh Dommaraju is sixth with eight points.

In the Women’s Norway Chess event, Bibisara Assaubayeva extended her lead by winning 3-0 over Divya Deshmukh. Playing black, Assaubayeva remained solid under pressure and capitalized when Divya ran low on time, converting her advantage into three points.

Zhu Jiner also achieved a 3-0 victory, defeating reigning Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun. Zhu maintained consistent pressure through the endgame and broke through in the final phase, moving level with Divya Deshmukh at 10 points each.

The match between Anna Muzychuk and Humpy Koneru ended in a classical draw. Their Armageddon tiebreak was also drawn but Koneru eventually prevailed with black under Armageddon rules to secure bonus points.

After Round 8, Bibisara Assaubayeva leads the Women’s Norway Chess with 15.5 points, followed by Anna Muzychuk on 10.5 points, and Divya Deshmukh and Zhu Jiner tied on 10 points each.
