Preity Zinta moves Bombay High Court over AI deepfake content

Mumbai: Actor Preity Zinta has approached the Bombay High Court seeking the removal of AI-generated deepfake videos, morphed images and other unauthorised content featuring her from social media and online platforms. The actor has also sought an injunction to prevent the publication and circulation of such content in the future.

Actor seeks immediate removal of AI-generated content

In her civil suit, Preity Zinta cited multiple instances of AI-generated deepfake videos, morphed visuals and chatbot-style interactions allegedly using her likeness without permission.

The petition urges the Bombay High Court to direct online platforms hosting such content to remove it immediately. It also seeks an order restraining the concerned entities from creating, publishing or circulating any unauthorised AI-generated content featuring the actor in the future.

The case comes amid increasing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create deceptive digital content involving public personalities.

Court asks parties to develop takedown mechanism

The matter was heard on Friday by a single bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar.

After hearing preliminary submissions, the court directed the parties, including the online platforms concerned, to work out a mechanism for removing the allegedly offending content.

The court did not pass any interim order on the merits of the case and scheduled the next hearing for July 6.

Growing concern over deepfakes

Deepfakes are digitally created or manipulated images, videos or audio recordings generated using artificial intelligence. The technology can realistically replicate a person’s face, voice and expressions, making it appear as though they said or did something that never actually happened.

The increasing availability of AI tools has raised concerns over privacy, identity misuse and the spread of misleading content online.

Preity Zinta’s petition adds to the growing number of legal efforts by public figures seeking protection against the unauthorised use of their identity through artificial intelligence.

The Bombay High Court is expected to consider the matter further at the next hearing after the parties submit details regarding the proposed takedown mechanism.
