Premier League 2024/25: Arsenal win 3-0 against Nottingham, Aston Villa manage a draw against Crystal Palace

New Delhi: The Premier League has returned after this year’s final international break for matchday 11. At the start of this week, Liverpool were at the top of the points table, leading with five points ahead of reigning champions Manchester City. City have now suffered back-to-back defeats, losing for the first time this season against Bournemouth.

After Chelsea won 2-1 against Leicester City, five games were played simultaneously. Fulham hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the side coming to the clash on the back of a win. Everton hosted Brentford after a disappointing first 11 games this season. After playing a draw with Chelsea in their last outing, Arsenal hosted Nottingham Forest. Bournemouth hosted Brighton and Hove Albion, who have been impressive this season, reaching the top five of the table. Aston Villa hosted Crystal Palace after losing 2-0 to Liverpool in the last game.

Fulham 1-4 Wolves

In the 20th minute, Alex Iwobi broke the deadlock and put Fulham ahead, with Kenny Tete spotting his teammate well from the right. Iwobi then moved inside with the ball and hit a brilliant curling shot with his left foot into the far corner. 11 minutes later, Matheus Cunha cancelled the lead after Mario Lemina made a stunning diagonal from his half. Cunha received the pass from the right after making a run from the deep before flicking the ball past the keeper from inside the area.

At the 53rd minute, Cunha placed a brilliantly disguised through ball to Joao Gomes and drove the ball into the bottom far from inside the left of the penalty area with a low shot. Cunha scored his brace in the 87th minute, with Gomes passing him a slightly chopped ball. Cunha whipped the ball brilliantly from outside the area. Despite their early advantage, Fulham never posed a real threat to the visitors. Goncalo Guedes scored the fourth goal for Wolves from a Jorgan Strand Larsen pass, taking home the three points that place them on ninth in the table.

Everton 0-0 Brentford

The first half between Everton and Brentford ended goalless, with both teams having their chances. Mark Flekken thwarted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s efforts twice, while Dwight McNeil’s poor shot from inside the box costed him a goal despite a brilliant run. Brentford, looded less threatening and except one occasion, when Yoane Wissa almost found the net but Jordan Pickford made a good save.

Neither side was impressive in the second half with none of them creating enough chances. For Brentford, it was their first away point in the season. They managed to keep a clean sheet as Everton’s lack of edge in their attack became more apparent as the game progressed as Bees defence was able to resist any counter attack that Beto presented towards the end of the game.

Arsenal 3-0 Nottingham Forest

Arsenal went one up early in the game when Bukayo Saka from Martin Odegaard’s shot from the left side of the box in the 15th minute. Saka drove the ball from the right with his left foot from Odegaard’s delicate pass. Arsenal were in a commanding position at the conclusion of the first half. Though the Gunners kept pushing, Nottingham’s defences didn’t give in further before the break.

Seven minutes after action resumed, Saka rolled a pass to Thomas Partey, unmarked by Nottingham. He shoots a brilliant goal from 25 yards into the left side.  Ethan Newari scored the third goal for his side in the 86th minute with Raheem Sterling making a brilliant pass on the inside. Winning by a margin of 3-0, Arsenal looked a determined unit and will happily sit on the fourth position for now.

Bournemouth 1-2 Brighton

Just four minutes after kick-off, Joao Pedro scored for the visitors. Danny Welbeck had first set up Georginio Rutter on the edge of the box, whose shot towards the bottom corner was brilliantly saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, only for the ball to ball in Pedro’s path, who taps-in for his second consecutive goal in the outfit. Bournemouth went into the break much more frustrated, having played better in the first half despite trailing their opponents.

The second half started with Kaoru Mitoma doubling The Seagulls’ lead with Pedro playing a brilliant pass. Mitoma finds the ball and easily puts it past Kepa, as Bournemouth’s defence looks clueless. Bournemouth took some comfort when, in the extra time, David Brooks turned the score 2-1 after Enes Unal placed a wide pass to his teammate. Brooks whips it into the top-left corner. It was, however, Brighton who took home the three points.

Aston Villa 2-2 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace went ahead early as well, with Ismaila Sarr breaking Aston Villa’s defence, and Jean-Philippe Mateta picked out Sarr with a precise pass, who finished the visitors’ first goal well. The Villans started a counter-attack, and the hosts levelled at the 36th minute when John McGinn played a clever through ball for Ollie Watkins, who finished well in finding the back of the net. Right before the break, Palace put themselves ahead with an excellent counter. It was Mateta’s pass that Sarr fed Justin Devenny, who shot it past Emiliano Martinez.

Aston Villa equalled in the 77th minute after Youri Tielemans’ shot into the box was headed by Ross Barkley. The two sides then tried their level best to score but they ended up sharing a point each. For most past it had looked that Palace were going to take away the game but Villa managed to finish better, coming from behind twice in the game.
