Premier League 2024/25: Chelsea manage to ease past Wolves to go fourth in table
New Delhi: Chelsea are finally back to winning ways and it was Wolves who suffered a damaging defeat at Stamford Bridge where the hosts did get a scare at half time but managed to recover and win the match comfortably. The first meaningful chance to score came from Chelsea’s talisman Cole Palmer, who missed Jose Sa’s right-hand post with his left-footed attempt and soon after, the Englishman tested the keeper from a similar position as he took his low shot that was saved by Sa.
It was a moment of madness in the Wolves box when Sa tried to catch the ball, but Doherty headed it past him and into his own net due to a communication breakdown. Luckily for the visitors, it was nothing more than a corner instead. However, the resulting corner did produce the goal in the 24th minute of the game for Chelsea. It was Tosin Adarabioyo who turned a shot into the net after a corner bounced out to Reece James, who sent it through the crowd in the box.
The goal stood after a VAR check even though the defender was flagged offside on the field. When Tosin was first flagged offisde, there weren’t many protests, but replays revealed that a stray Wolves leg was sticking out behind him. After that goal, the half remained pretty quite at both the ends until Mat Doherty drew level in the added time of first half. Robert Sanchesz dropped Matheus Cunha’s inswinging corner and Doherty was the first to react and poke the ball into the net. It was a moment that the Chelsea keeper would want to forget as it ended 1-1 at half time.

Chelsea were up for it straightaway in the second half as they wanted their lead back with a few chances they managed to create immediately after the restart. However, they were rewarded for their urgency when Dewsbury-Hall flicked on Noni Madueke’s fizzing cross, and Marc Cucurella, who was positioned as a number nine, stepped up to control and turn the ball into the net with his right foot. A proper striker’s goal from a defender provided Chelsea with the lead at the hour mark.
It didn’t take the hosts long to score the third goal and put the game past Wolves just five minute after making it 2-1. It was Noni Madueke who probably couldn’t have scored an easier goal as Cole Palmer’s free kick was missed by progressing Sa and Chalobah headed it beyond him to find Madueke lurking as he headed it home from clos, to make it 3-1. From there, the home team was comparatively at ease, with Jackson scoring from an offside position before squandering another good opportunity. In their next four league games, Wolves will play Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Bournemouth. They are currently in 17th place, four goals above the relegation zone. The next game for Chelsea is on Saturday night against Manchester City.

A good night of defensive duty and also contributing at the other end of the pitch with an assist to his name. Trevor Chalobah had quite a night returning to Stamford Bridge with his first appearance for the Blues after he was called back from a loan spell at Crystal Palace. It was a confident performance from the English defender who is having a more than decent Premier League seaoson, first for Palace and now back at Chelsea. He had a 96% passing accuracy and was heavily involved for his role, in the opposition half as he also created two chances, one of which was headed goalwards but Madueke scored it instead. Overall a good day at the office for Chalobah in the end.
