Premier League 2025-26: Sunderland, Manchester United play out goalless draw
Sunderland and Manchester United played out a goalless stalemate in a Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Sunderland controlled the game for most of it, but failed to make the most of its chances against a jaded United side.
The Red Devils came alive only towards the end, producing a flurry of chances in the final minutes. Forward Matheus Cunha had the best of the lot, after wing-back Patrick Dorgu found him inside the six-yard box with a cut-back.
But, Cunha’s right-footed shot was repelled by home keeper Robin Roefs.
Manchester United is already assured of Champions League football following its win over Liverpool last weekend.
Michael Carrick’s third-placed side has little left to play for in and it showed in a dour affair at the Stadium of Light. It was the first time United had failed to score in a league game since November.
“Today is a positive result in terms of the point,” said Carrick, whose side have 65 points from 36 games, said. “Was it going to be a perfect game? We weren’t expecting a perfect game. It is what it is.”

Bournemouth moved into sixth place with a 1-0 victory at Fulham in which both sides ended with 10 men.
With sixth place potentially coming with a Champions League berth, should Villa win the Europa League final and finish fifth in the table, Bournemouth is still in the hunt for a dream debut in Europe’s elite club competition.
Brazilian teenager Rayan struck home a low shot early in the second half for Bournemouth after being teed up by Adam Smith.
Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion also boosted its hopes of qualifying for Europe as it beat bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0.
