Major progress has been made towards operating 300 electric buses in Kanpur. Land has been identified for charging depots at Chakeri Airport Road and Koparganj, which will benefit both public transport and the environment.
Kanpur: The way now seems to be clear for operation of 300 electric buses in Kanpur. The administration and the Municipal Corporation have identified land for two modern charging depots. The construction work will start after the necessary formalities are completed, which is expected to give new strength to the public transport system in the city and surrounding districts.
Preparations for operation of 300 electric buses intensified in Kanpur
The long pending project of 300 electric buses in Kanpur now seems to be progressing rapidly. The administration and the Municipal Corporation have identified land at two places for charging infrastructure, which is the biggest hurdle in the operation of buses. Modern charging depot and bus parking will be developed in Koparganj area near Chakeri Airport Road and Jhakarkati bus stand. The construction work will start after the land transfer and other administrative formalities are completed. If all the processes are completed on time, then the city can get the gift of 300 new electric buses before the assembly elections.
Modern charging depots will be built in Chakeri and Koparganj
The state government has already allocated 300 electric buses for Kanpur, but the plan was not going ahead due to lack of charging depot. To overcome this problem, a joint team of Municipal Corporation, District Administration and Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) inspected many places. After inspection, about eight acres of land near Chakeri Airport Road and about 10 acres of land in Koparganj area were considered suitable for the project. Bus parking, repair centers and other modern operational facilities will also be developed at both these places along with charging stations.
Construction work will start after land transfer
In May 2026, the Municipal Corporation had sent a proposal to KDA to provide land for a charging depot under the PM E-Bus Seva Yojana. After this, the joint team inspected the land and prepared its report. Recently, Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has also sent a letter to the Municipal Corporation requesting to provide land for the project soon. Now the process of land transfer will be completed after the revenue records, ownership and other documents are available from KDA. The administration says that the construction work will start as soon as the final approval is received.
Passengers from nearby districts will also get benefit
The benefits of operating 300 electric buses will not be limited to Kanpur city only. This will also provide better public transport facilities to the passengers of areas like Fatehpur, Ghatampur, Bilhaur, Hamirpur, Unnao and Kanpur Dehat. At present, operation of electric buses on many inter-district routes is limited due to lack of charging depots. After construction of new charging stations, regular e-bus service can be started on these routes also, which will provide relief to thousands of passengers.
Transport Department officials believe that after the construction of a modern charging depot, charging of a large number of buses simultaneously will be possible. This will make the operation of buses more organized and dependence on diesel buses will be reduced. The increase in electric buses will also help in reducing air pollution, saving fuel and developing an environment-friendly public transport system in the city. After the completion of the project, Kanpur’s urban transport system is expected to get new momentum.
