Preparation to make Delhi greener with Green Action Plan, 22 departments will together plant more than 70.05 lakh trees and plants.

Delhi government has launched ‘Green Action Plan (GAP) 2026-27’ to make the capital pollution free and green. Under this scheme, 22 government departments together will plant a total of more than 70.05 lakh trees, bushes and bamboo hedges this year. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced this ambitious campaign on Wednesday, April 1. The scheme will be monitored by the ‘Department of Forest and Wildlife’ and the progress of all the works will be monitored through the ‘GAP Portal’.

To give new heights to the tree plantation campaign in Delhi, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that this initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. The minister said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government is pursuing a bigger target than last year. “We are not limited to just pollution control, but want to rapidly increase and strengthen Delhi’s green cover,” he stressed.

Which department achieved how much target?

Under the ‘Green Action Plan (GAP) 2026-27’ of Delhi Government, the responsibility of planting 70,05,386 saplings has been divided among various departments:

Forest Department – more than 27 lakh saplings

DDA – 10 lakhs

NDMC – 5.05 lakh

MCD – 5 lakhs

PWD – 3 lakhs

School Education Department – 3.5 lakh

The goals of other departments are as follows:

NHAI – 60 thousand

NTPC – 70 thousand

Technical Education Department – 41 thousand

Higher Education Department – more than 25 thousand

This scheme is being implemented with all departmental cooperation to strengthen the greenery and pollution control of Delhi.

General public will get 12 lakh saplings free of cost

Delhi government has also planned to bring public participation into the mainstream in the tree plantation campaign. Under this, more than 12 lakh saplings will be distributed free of cost to the common citizens of the capital through the Forest Department, DPGS and DMRC. The objective of this initiative is not to be limited to just planting trees at the government level, but to make Delhi green and pollution free by involving citizens in green initiatives.

Emphasis on multi-layer plantation and plant care

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa told about the strategy of the campaign that the government plans to do ‘multi-layer plantation’. This will include not only big trees but also shrubs and ground cover, thereby strengthening both the environmental balance and green cover. The minister said that all departments have been instructed to regularly update their progress on the GAP portal. He stressed, “Our aim is not just to plant trees, but to keep them alive by taking proper care of them, so that each plant grows and increases the greenery of Delhi.”
