President Murmu spoke in ‘Kartik Jatra’ – Tribal society should adopt modern education and technology while staying connected to cultural roots.
Gumla, 30 December. President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday participated as the chief guest in the inter-state mass cultural gathering ‘Kartik Jatra’ in Raidih block of Gumla district in Jharkhand. During this, he stressed the need to preserve the identity and heritage of the tribal society.
President Murmu called upon the youth to move forward through modern education, science and technology while remaining connected to their cultural roots. He said that education is the biggest capital of development and only through its expansion the overall development of the society and the state is possible.

Tribal hero Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon was a source of inspiration for all.
Paying tribute to the memory of the great tribal leader Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon, resident of Gumla, Jharkhand, the President said that he was an inspiration for all. Despite receiving education abroad, he kept his thinking dedicated to his soil and his people and considered education as the most powerful medium of social change. Today, people are remembering him with the same spirit through ‘Kartik Jatra’, which is a meaningful initiative in itself.
Pankhraj’s dream of establishing a university in Gumla will soon come true.
The President said that establishment of Pankhraj University in Gumla district was his dream, which will be realized soon. He said that this region connecting Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha is rich in rivers, mountains, plateaus and forests and has been witness to the oldest traditions of the country. Coming to Jharkhand, the birthplace and workplace of Lord Birsa Munda, it feels like a pilgrimage. Birsa Munda is today revered throughout the country as a great symbol of social justice and tribal pride.

Highlighting the historical background of Gumla district, President Murmu said that the great social reformer and freedom fighter Jatra Tana Bhagat was also born on this land. He led a non-violent movement against British rule in line with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Apart from this, he also respectfully remembered Param Vir Chakra winner Martyr Albert Ekka, whose birthplace is Gumla district, who displayed unparalleled bravery in the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

The President openly appreciated the rich cultural heritage of the tribal community. He said that the music, drama, dance and art traditions of the tribal society are extremely rich. This is the reason why more than 100 tribal artists from across the country have been awarded the Padma Shri. During the programme, tribal traditional dance troupes from different states of the country presented attractive and colorful displays of their folk art and culture. A large number of people were present on this occasion and a festive atmosphere was seen in the entire area.
