While the President arrived to attend the 9th International Santhal Conference, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her ministers were not present. Expressing surprise at this, the President said, “Usually the Chief Minister is expected to welcome the President on his arrival. Mamata is like my younger sister, but I don’t understand why she is upset.” The President also commented on the lapses in preparations for the meeting and the apathy of the state government.

Taking a serious note of this matter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticized the TMC government. “Insulting a tribal woman President in this manner is an insult to democracy and the Constitution,” the Prime Minister said.
