Preventing hangovers: What to eat before drinking to stop nausea, headaches later?

New Delhi: The festive season is here and what is Christmas and New Year’s celebration without a round of cocktails with friends and family? And now, with New Year’s Eve coming up soon, it is time to prepare for a long night of celebration to usher into 2025. But who wants to start a New Year with a hangover? Fret not, we have got you covered as some simple foods can be enjoyed before repeat rounds of mulled wine and shots to dodge a hangover the next day. While most have relied upon a glass of milk or carbs in the form of bread to give the stomach some relief, some experts recommend eating cheese before drinking alcohol to dodge a hangover the next day. Read on to know why.

How does cheese help dodge a hangover the next day?

Cheese is a source of proteins, fats, and complex carbs that form a stomach lining to prevent alcohol absorption in the body. It helps metabolise alcohol better thereby preventing liver damage. It also replenishes the body with nutrients like B vitamins and calcium. These are usually lost when alcohol is consumed. This component helps improve muscle and nerve function, and B vitamins are a must for energy and metabolism.

With that being said, many might turn to cheese conveniently as a license to drink alcohol. However, cheese continues to be a high-calorie and high-fat food option which can lead to weight gain and high cholesterol if consumed mindlessly. And not all types of cheese are made the same. It is also a popular side served with a glass of wine.

How much alcohol is safe for intake?

According to the NHS, it is advised to drink only 16 units of alcohol in a week. This is equal to six pints of beer or approximately 10 small glasses of wine. Irrespective, one must remember that alcohol in no form is good for health. One must try and observe complete abstinence if possible. However, if one must have, then it should be coupled with cheddar cheese or other safer varieties other than processed cheese, which is essentially high in sodium and trans fat.
