New Delhi, 13 February. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated BNP President Tariq Rahman on registering a big victory in the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh. He said that this victory shows the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in his leadership. PM Modi posted on the social media platform
PM Modi further wrote in the ‘X’ post, “I look forward to working with you to strengthen our diverse relationships and advance our common development goals.” Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Tariq Rahman has won the Dhaka-17 seat in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections 2026. Tariq Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December last year after being in voluntary exile for more than 17 years. This was his first major election contest after returning to the country, in which he won. After the victory, Rehman appealed to the party leaders and workers to organize special prayers after the afternoon ‘Juma’ prayers across the country instead of taking out victory processions.
Tariq Rehman is 60 years old and comes from a prominent political family. Both his parents have been former Prime Ministers. His mother, Khaleda Zia, was the country’s first female Prime Minister and was considered a major political rival of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Rahman returned to Bangladesh last December from London after 17 years in political exile. He had come to the country just a few days before his mother’s death. Since then he has been continuously active in election campaigning, holding large rallies and promises like restoring law and order, rebuilding infrastructure and health services.
Talking about the election results, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is leading on 198 seats. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is leading on 62 seats, while National Citizen Party (NCP) is leading on 2 seats. According to the Dhaka Tribune report, counting of votes is still going on. This time voting took place on 299 parliamentary seats out of 300, as the election was postponed due to the death of a candidate on one seat.
