Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sikkim, ₹4000 crore development project and closing ceremony of the 50th foundation anniversary

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Sikkim for two days. During this visit, he will inaugurate various development projects worth about ₹4000 crore and will participate in the closing ceremony organized on the occasion of the 50th foundation anniversary of the state.

After reaching Gangt, a formal reception was organized for the Prime Minister. He will take part in a road show from the Living helipad to the Governor’s House (Lok Bhawan), where local citizens and supporters are expected to be in attendance.

During the visit, the Prime Minister will inaugurate several projects in the education, health, connectivity, tourism, agriculture and infrastructure sectors. The proposed projects include a 100-bed hospital at Namchi, a 30-bed health center at Deorali, two double-lane steel bridges over the river Tata and a Civil Service Officers’ Institute at Gangtok.

The goals of these projects are to expand modern facilities in the state and promote regional development. The initiatives will help strengthen healthcare, transportation and administrative infrastructure.

Sikkim completed 50 years as a part of India on 26 May 2025. On this occasion, various programs are organized throughout the year, the concluding ceremony of which is being held in the presence of the Prime Minister.

The annexation of Sikkim to India is an important historical event. After India’s independence in 1947, Sikkim was an independent monarchy. In 1950, an agreement was signed between India and Sikkim, through which Sikkim became a protected state of India.

Sikkim’s strategic importance increased after tensions with China in the Nath-La region in 1967. Later in the decade of 1970, when political instability increased, the Government of India took action to deal with the situation.

A referendum was held in 1975, where a large majority voted in favor of joining India. After this, the Indian Parliament officially declared Sikkim as the 22nd state of India through the 36th constitutional amendment.

This visit reflects the government policy focused on the development of North-East India. As a mountainous and border state, development of infrastructure and connectivity in Sikkim is important for national security and economic growth.

According to experts, tourism, employment and investment opportunities can increase through these projects, which will strengthen the local economy.
