The 2011 ODI World Cup final which was played at the Wankhede Stadium, holds a special place in the hearts of Indian fans as that was the day when India ended a 28-year drought and lifted their second World Cup title.

One of the many people present in the audience during the match was none other than out-of-favour India batter Prithvi Shaw, who was then only 11 years old. He was at the Wankhede with his friend Arjun Tendulkar, son of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who was on the field.

Speaking on the eve of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Shaw reflected on what he described as his first memory at the Wankhede.

“My first memory that I remember, and it’s for the rest of my life, was when I came here to watch the 2011 World Cup. I was 11 that time; me and Arjun Tendulkar, my friend, we both sat here and watched that game live,” Shaw said.

“I still remember the moment when we lifted that World Cup. What an experience. That was my first time,” Shaw added.

Despite being once hailed as one of the finest talents to ever come out from Mumbai, Shaw’s career has been on a downward spiral and the batter has no one but himself to blame for it.

The batter has been continually dropped from Mumbai’s sides in domestic cricket, with indiscipline cited as a major factor. He also went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction.
